Four Arrested with Tk 6 Lakh in Fake Notes in Fulbaria Placed on Two-Day Remand

Staff Reporter • Reading time: 2 min

A court has allowed four people arrested with counterfeit money in Fulbaria, Mymensingh, to be taken on remand for two days each. Senior Judicial Magistrate Tahmina Akter Toma of the No. 10 cognizance court of the Mymensingh Chief Judicial Magistrate Court granted this remand on Sunday.

The arrested persons are Mostafa Fakir (48), son of A. Rashid Fakir of Taltali upazila in Barguna district; Ismail Biswas (49); Golam Mostafa (28), son of the late Meher Ali of Shibpur village in Fulbaria upazila; and Abu Sayeed (25), son of Ayub Ali of the same upazila.

According to police sources, on Thursday afternoon Fulbaria police conducted an operation in Shibpur village of Naogaon union in the upazila and arrested them. Fake notes worth Tk 6 lakh 10 thousand were recovered from them in the operation.

On Friday, the day after the arrest, the police sent the accused to court and applied for a five-day remand. After the hearing on the remand application ended on Sunday, the court granted two days of remand for each of them.

Moshiur Rahman, inspector (investigation) of Fulbaria police station and the investigating officer of the case, confirmed the matter of two days' remand being granted for each of the four accused.

The trade in counterfeit notes is usually run through an organized ring — the notes are printed somewhere, then spread to the market through various hands. In remand interrogation, bringing out from the arrested persons the source of these fake notes, the supply ring and whether anyone else is involved will be the main goal of the investigation.

Law enforcement agencies warn that the tendency to spread fake notes rises during big festival seasons including Eid and Puja and in crowded marketplaces. The harm to ordinary people is direct — if someone unknowingly receives a fake note, they have to lose its entire value, because if it is caught by a bank or the police, that note is confiscated.

Those concerned advise checking the watermark, the security thread, indistinct printing and the quality of the paper when taking notes. If a suspicious note is received, informing the nearest police station is the safe path.

The investigation in this incident is now at the remand interrogation stage. Based on the information obtained at the end of the interrogation, the police will take the next legal steps and, if necessary, operations may also be conducted against other members of the ring.

After their remand ends, the accused will be produced before the court again. Then, according to the progress of the investigation, the police may seek further remand if needed, or may apply for them to be sent to jail.
