Two Students Beaten with Shoes on College Premises for Blocking a Mobile Number, Investigation Committee Formed

Staff Reporter • Reading time: 4 min

An allegation has been raised against a classmate of beating two students with shoes on the premises of Muladi Government College in Barishal for keeping a mobile number blocked. According to the allegation, the classmate and outsiders who were with her called the two students out of class and beat them with shoes in front of the college. As a video of the incident spread on social media, an uproar has been created across the area.

Demanding justice for this incident, the victims on Saturday (17 October) submitted written complaints to the college principal and the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO). The college authorities have formed a two-member committee to investigate the incident.

College principal Delwar Hossain said, citing the written complaint, that the two victim students were friends with one of their classmate students. They used to commute to college together. A few days ago an altercation took place between them over a trivial matter. Following that, the two victim students kept the classmate’s mobile number blocked.

The principal said that, angered by this, the classmate on Thursday had the victims called out of the classroom through another classmate. Later, it is mentioned in the complaint, several outsiders including the classmate’s elder sister attacked them.

The principal said the two students stated in the written complaint that the accused classmate and the outsiders with her tugged and pulled at their hair. In addition, they were beaten indiscriminately with shoes. The victims also mentioned in the complaint that they were given death threats, as well as threats that their coming to college would be stopped.

Meanwhile, someone has spread the video of the attack on the social media platform Facebook. In the video, five or six young women including the two students are seen engaged in an altercation in the college courtyard. At one stage a scuffle begins among them. In the video, several people are clearly seen pulling the hair of the two students and physically assaulting them. Scenes of them being beaten badly with shoes are also clear there.

However, a reliable source at the college, speaking on condition of anonymity, said it is believed the attack was carried out not only because the number was blocked on the mobile, but also in revenge for an incident that took place earlier.

The victims said they have applied to the college principal and the upazila administration demanding a fair investigation of the incident and strict legal and administrative measures against those involved. Otherwise they do not consider their coming and going to college to be safe.

On the other hand, the accused student’s sister has denied the allegation. She claimed that the attack that took place there happened because of those two students. They had come prepared with outsiders to attack them. At one stage of the altercation over this matter, when they attacked, this incident occurred while resisting. She also claimed that those who filmed the video and spread it on social media are the students’ people. She too has applied to the college principal and the UNO demanding justice for the incident and has demanded a fair trial.

Muladi Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Golam Sarwar said the responsibility for resolving the problem that has arisen among the students has been given to the college principal. It is hoped he will be able to provide a fair resolution of the matter. To his knowledge, an investigation committee has been formed at the college, and a fair resolution will be achieved on the basis of that committee’s report.

Delwar Hossain, principal of Muladi Government College, said an undesirable incident has occurred among the college’s students. A written complaint has been received in this connection. A two-member committee has been formed to investigate the incident. A resolution of the incident will be possible on the basis of the committee’s report. He also said the matter of ensuring such incidents do not happen at the college again is being looked at with importance.

The incident of such an attack on students on the premises of an educational institution has created concern among guardians and students. Now everyone’s eyes are on the investigation committee’s report — what measures are taken against those involved will be determined on the basis of that report.
