NISCHA runs special campaign in Barlekha to ease traffic jams and restore road discipline

Staff Reporter • Reading time: 1 min

The Barlekha upazila branch of Nirapad Sarak Chai (NISCHA), a national social-voluntary organisation, has been running a special traffic campaign and awareness programme for four consecutive days in Barlekha to prevent road accidents, relieve severe traffic congestion and restore traffic discipline.

The activity is part of a month-long series of programmes marking National Road Safety Day, and today was its 19th day. On the occasion of Sharodiya Durga Puja, the programme is being held jointly by Barlekha Thana police and NISCHA to reduce public suffering.

During the campaign on Monday (19 October) afternoon, NISCHA leaders and local administration officials took position at important road junctions and worked to raise awareness among drivers, passengers and pedestrians.

The campaign especially focused on stopping illegal parking, preventing driving on the wrong side of the road, controlling unfit vehicles, and encouraging pedestrians to use zebra crossings.

Recently, a NISCHA delegation met the local administration and placed various proposals on strengthening road safety and easing congestion. Based on those proposals, this field-level campaign has been energised with the support of the local administration and traffic police.

Alongside officials of the local and municipal administrations, those taking part included NISCHA Barlekha upazila branch senior vice-president Marjanul Islam, vice-president Golam Kibria, organising secretary Jomir Uddin, office secretary Shahab Uddin, and executive members Jahangir Alam, Probins Suchiang and Rahel Ahmad, among other leaders.

NISCHA leaders said road discipline cannot be restored by government goodwill or law enforcement alone. It requires awareness among people of all levels and a mindset among drivers to obey traffic laws.

They added that NISCHA's social movement and field-level activities will continue until a congestion-free and disciplined road environment is ensured.
