27 Detained in Sylhet Police Combing Operation; Vehicles Seized, Cases Filed
Police have detained 27 people in a combing operation in Sylhet. Vehicles were seized during the drive and cases have been filed in connection with the operation, according to reports. The drive was carried out to keep the law-and-order situation in the city and surrounding areas under control.
A combing operation generally means a large police drive conducted simultaneously at multiple places by multiple teams. In Sylhet too, several police teams took to the field, carried out searches and checks, and detained 27 people as suspects.
Legal proceedings against those detained are under way. Action is also being taken under the law regarding the seized vehicles, and investigations will proceed on the basis of the cases filed, related sources said.
During this Durga Puja period, the administration and law-enforcement agencies are on special alert over security across Sylhet Division. Reports in previous days also spoke of puja pavilion visits, surveillance and strengthened patrols in different districts of the division. Against that backdrop, many see the city combing operation as part of festival-time security preparations.
At the same time, other organisational and social developments have taken place in Sylhet Division. In Gowainghat, eight Chhatra Dal activists were served show-cause notices over allegations of extortion, a development that has sparked discussion in local politics.
A prayer gathering was held at Sylhet District Press Club in memory of journalist Tuhinul Haque. The programme by the journalist community reflected grief and respect in the division's media circles.
In another report from the Sylhet region, Member of Parliament Faisal said Durga Puja is being celebrated this time in an exceptionally joyful atmosphere within living memory. Alongside that festive assessment, the police operation shows the administration is active in the field to ensure security behind the celebrations.
Local residents say movement of people increases in the city during festival days, along with traffic and crowds. Visible police activity at such a time brings relief to ordinary people, while they also expect correct application of the law in cases of detention and prosecution.
Full details about the identities of the 27 detained, the specific allegations against them and the seized vehicles have not yet been made public. The picture will become clearer if police provide a detailed briefing.
Residents are watching whether such operations and patrols will continue in Sylhet through the puja and the following festival period. Keeping law and order normal remains the administration's main goal.
