Eight Chhatra Dal Leaders Show-Caused Over Alleged Road Extortion in Sylhet

Staff Reporter • Reading time: 2 min

Eight leaders of Chhatra Dal have been served show-cause notices over allegations of extortion carried out by stopping vehicles on roads in Sylhet, according to a report by local outlet Sylhet Today 24.

The report says the eight leaders were linked to allegations of stopping moving vehicles on Sylhet roads and demanding money. After the allegation surfaced, organisational proceedings were initiated against them.

A show-cause notice asks the accused to explain in writing, within a set time, why organisational action should not be taken against them.

Extortion allegations are always a sensitive issue for political organisations. Stopping vehicles on the road to extract money draws strong reactions from the public and from transport workers.

Complaints involving the transport sector surface in the Sylhet region from time to time. Ensuring the safety of drivers and passengers and unobstructed movement on the roads is also a major responsibility of the local administration.

The report does not specify the organisational ranks of the eight accused leaders, nor does it publish their names or a detailed account of the allegation.

Details such as which road the incident took place on and when have not yet emerged. However, the fact that eight leaders were show-caused together suggests the organisation has taken the matter seriously.

Organisations typically decide their next steps after receiving replies to show-cause notices. If the replies are found unsatisfactory, disciplinary action may follow, as has been seen in various political parties.

No statement has yet been received from the accused leaders. What they say in response to the notices remains to be seen.

The incident is being discussed locally. There has long been a public demand for a firm stance against those involved in road extortion.

Attention now turns to the organisation's next decision. The full picture will become clearer once the eight leaders' replies and any inquiry findings are known.
