Kyle Kennedy, Granddaughter of Robert F Kennedy, Dies at 42 after a Life Devoted to Education Reform

Staff Reporter • Reading time: 2 min

Kyle Kennedy, the granddaughter of Robert F Kennedy and Ethel Kennedy, has died at the age of 42. The cause of death of the Kennedy scion, who spent her life working on education reform and disability rights, has not yet been officially established.

According to an obituary published by Burke Funeral Homes, Kyle Kennedy, the daughter of Michael Kennedy and Victoria Gifford Kennedy, died on 21 September at her home in Massachusetts. People magazine reported that her cause of death remains pending.

Born in Washington, DC, on 6 July 1984, Kennedy spent much of her upbringing in Cohasset, Massachusetts. She attended Milton Academy before earning a bachelor's degree in history from Georgetown University.

Her education did not stop there. She went on to earn a master of science in early education from Pace University and a master of education in education policy and management from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

She began her professional life with Teach for America, teaching for two years in New York City public schools. According to her obituary, that experience sparked a lifelong commitment to early childhood education and education reform.

Over the course of her career, she advocated for equitable elementary education and charter schools, collaborated with education technology companies on curriculum improvement, and served as an instructional coach for primary school educators.

Kennedy was an avid athlete and long-distance runner. In 2019 she completed the Boston Marathon — a feat of physical endurance that makes the accident which later changed her life all the more poignant.

In 2020, she suffered a severe spinal cord injury that caused long-term paralysis and significant health obstacles. Afterwards she focused on disability rights advocacy, including testifying at the Massachusetts State House on healthcare discrimination against individuals living with disabilities.

She was preceded in death by her father, Michael, in 1997, and by her infant daughter, Josie. She is survived by her sons Conor, 12, and Declan, 10; her ex-husband Liam; her mother Victoria; her brother Michael and his family; and her sister Rory and her family.

Her mother Victoria is the daughter of Frank Gifford and Maxine Avis Ewart and the stepdaughter of Kathie Lee Gifford — meaning Kyle was linked by family ties not only to the Kennedy political dynasty but also to America's sporting and media worlds.

The untimely death of another member of the Kennedy family has once again revived discussion in the United States of the famous political family's long history of misfortune. In the tributes of family and colleagues, however, Kyle's identity endures as a teacher and rights campaigner — a woman who carried her fight from the classroom to the state legislature.
