An unidentified pedestrian has been killed after being run over by a bus in Sitakunda, Chattogram. The dead man is believed to have been around 30 years old.
The accident happened at about 6:30am on Thursday (22 October) in the Madam Bibirhat area of the Dhaka-Chattogram highway in the upazila.
Sub-Inspector (SI) Milton Mondal of the Bar Aulia Highway police station confirmed the accident.
SI Milton Mondal said a Dhaka-bound Jonaki Paribahan bus ran over the pedestrian while he was crossing the highway as the bus passed through the Madam Bibirhat area.
The pedestrian died on the spot after being crushed, police said, struck at the very moment he was crossing the highway.
The bus that hit him fled the scene after the accident, and highway police said it could not be detained.
Angered by the incident, local people turned restive. The agitated crowd seized another Jonaki Paribahan bus.
The dead man's identity has not yet been established, and police said efforts to identify him are under way.
After the accident, the body was recovered and sent to the morgue of Chattogram Medical College Hospital.
SI Milton Mondal said legal action would be taken over the incident. Attention will now turn to identifying and bringing to book the fleeing bus and its driver, and to the next steps once the dead man's identity is confirmed.
