Three Arrested in Gazipur's Kaliganj over Alleged Rape of Child with Intellectual Disability, One Accused on the Run
Police have arrested three men in Kaliganj, Gazipur, over allegations that a 12-year-old child with an intellectual disability was raped. Another accused person in the case remains on the run.
The family alleges that four men from the same village raped the child repeatedly in turn. The child became pregnant as a result. It is further alleged that one of the accused, realising what had happened, gave the victim medicine that terminated her five-month pregnancy.
The arrested men are Ahad, 22, Nazrul, 45, and Shamim, 42. Police said the name of the fugitive accused is not yet known.
Kaliganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Zakir Hossain confirmed the arrests early on Thursday, October 22.
The case began on Wednesday night, October 21, when the child's mother filed a complaint at Kaliganj Police Station. Police moved into action after the written complaint was lodged.
Police said a team led by Kaliganj Circle Additional Superintendent of Police Sheikh Muttajul Islam raided the area at around 12:30 a.m. on Wednesday night, acting on the complaint. Ahad, Nazrul and Shamim were arrested in that operation.
Another accused fled after sensing the presence of police during the raid. Police said the operation to arrest him is continuing.
OC Md Zakir Hossain said three people had been arrested. He added that further legal steps against the arrested men, along with a medical examination of the victim, are under process.
Such allegations involving a child with an intellectual disability have caused deep concern locally. The child's physical and mental condition and her family's safety are now the most pressing questions.
According to police, the next steps in the case will be determined by the medical examination report and the progress of the investigation. The arrested men may also be produced before a court as part of the process.
It is hoped that more details of the incident will emerge once the fugitive accused is arrested. Until the investigation is complete, the allegations will be treated as matters under investigation.
