Jubo League Leader Dragged Off Bus, Beaten in Lakshmipur Mob Attempt; Chhatra Dal Leader Arrested
A Jubo League leader, VP Mejbah Uddin Helal, was allegedly dragged off a passenger bus, beaten and subjected to an attempted mob attack in Lakshmipur. The district Detective Branch (DB) of police has arrested a Chhatra Dal leader, Md Jamal Hossain, 32, in connection with the incident.
Acting on a tip-off, police raided the grounds of Lakshmipur Balika Bidyaniketan in the Uttar Temuhani area of Lakshmipur Sadar upazila around 12 midnight on Wednesday (21 October) and rescued Mejbah Uddin Helal. Jamal Hossain was arrested at the scene.
According to sources in the district detective branch's patrol team, some 10 to 12 unidentified men forced Mejbah Uddin Helal off an 'Econo' Paribahan bus near Jhumur Mor and took him to an unknown location.
His whereabouts were later traced with the help of technology, and the DB police carried out the raid. It was through that rescue operation that Helal was finally recovered safely.
Mejbah Uddin Helal alleged that he was branded a 'fascist's accomplice' and taken to the Lakshmipur Balika Bidyaniketan ground in the Uttar Station area, where he was beaten and an attempt was made to subject him to a mob lynching.
The arrested Jamal Hossain is a joint convener of the Lakshmipur district unit of Chhatra Dal. He is the son of Abu Sayeed of the Dakshin Majupur area of Ward 10 of Lakshmipur municipality.
Mejbah Uddin Helal, on the other hand, is the son of the late Sirajul Haque of Purba Char Kalakopa village in Ramgati upazila.
The incident unfolded with a passenger being openly forced off a bus, creating a stir in the area. Such an act in front of bus passengers and local people has raised fresh questions about public safety.
Local conscious citizens say an incident like this — seizing someone over their political identity, beating them and attempting a mob lynching — points to a tendency to take the law into one's own hands.
No detailed information is yet available about the next steps to identify and arrest the others involved. Although 10 to 12 people were allegedly involved, only one person has been arrested so far.
It is hoped that the police's further investigation will clarify the identities of the rest and the full picture behind the incident. No details were available either on whether preparations are under way to produce the arrested Jamal Hossain before a court after interrogation and legal procedures.
