Two Killed, Three Injured as Truck Hits Autorickshaw in Rupganj on Dhaka-Sylhet Highway
Two people were killed in a head-on collision between a truck and a battery-run autorickshaw in Rupganj, Narayanganj. The accident happened on Thursday afternoon in the Moikuli area of the Dhaka-Sylhet highway.
Three more people, including the autorickshaw driver, were seriously injured in the accident. Local people rescued them and took them to hospital.
The dead are Shahnaz Begum (55), a resident of the Moikuli area, and Rifat Hossain (20), son of Jasim Uddin of the same area. Both died on the spot.
Jasim Uddin, in-charge of Bhulta Highway Police, said that around 1 pm on Thursday a battery-run autorickshaw carrying passengers was heading from the Moikuli area toward Rupshi.
At that time it collided head-on with a speeding truck coming from the opposite direction. Passengers in the autorickshaw were thrown out by the impact.
The autorickshaw was mangled in the collision. Two passengers died on the spot and three others were seriously injured.
After the accident, local people came forward, rescued the injured and sent them to hospital. Police said the identities of the injured could not be confirmed immediately.
Bhulta Highway Police have seized the truck involved in the accident. Legal proceedings over the incident are under way.
Accidents are frequently reported on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway because of traffic pressure and speed. Drivers and passengers believe the risk of collision is higher when small vehicles and heavy vehicles share the same road.
Police are taking the legal process forward to determine the cause of the accident and responsibility. The condition of the injured is also being followed up.
