Allegation of 60 Lakh Taka Embezzled from a Sylhet School, With Claims of a Cover-Up Attempt

Staff Reporter

An allegation has surfaced in Sylhet that 60 lakh taka has been embezzled from a school. There are also claims that an attempt is being made to cover up the allegation. With such a charge raised over an educational institution's funds, local questions have followed: how, and through whom, was such a large sum moved, and why would there be an attempt to hush it up.

According to the allegation, 60 lakh taka was embezzled from the school's funds. Money belonging to an institution like a school comes from students, guardians and various public and private sources, and it is meant to be spent on teaching, infrastructure and the institution's overall development. Any allegation of irregularity with such funds is therefore always treated as serious.

The second part of the allegation is more worrying. It is claimed that instead of bringing the alleged embezzlement into the open, an attempt has been made to conceal it. When an allegation of wrongdoing is buried rather than faced with an investigation, it raises big questions about accountability inside the institution itself.

In the information available so far, it is not known from which school's funds the money was taken, who faces the allegation, or when and under what heading the money was withdrawn. Who raised the allegation is also not clear.

The amount involved, however, is not small. Sixty lakh taka is a large budget for a school; a sum like that could repair classrooms, buy teaching materials or expand facilities for students. If the embezzlement allegation proves true, the direct loss will fall on the students.

Allegations of financial irregularity at educational institutions can usually be verified through audits of accounts, bank transaction records and vouchers. In this case too, those concerned expect that an impartial investigation would be able to trace how the money was moved and identify those responsible.

Questions about fund management at educational institutions in the Sylhet region are already common among guardians. An allegation of embezzlement of this size against one school has brought that discussion back to the fore. Many believe the truth of the allegation must be verified quickly in the interests of guardians and students.

It remains to be seen whether the authorities take the allegation into account and begin a formal investigation. If an inquiry starts, the full picture — the school's name, the identities of the accused and the prospect of recovering the money — will become clear. Further information will follow as any investigation progresses.
