Deaths from Measles and Measles-Like Symptoms Pass 200 in Sylhet, Raising Alarm

Staff Reporter

The number of deaths from measles and measles-like symptoms in Sylhet has passed 200. The figure emerged in reports received on Friday. News of so many lives lost to a preventable disease has caused concern across the division, particularly among parents worried about their children's health.

Measles is a contagious viral disease that usually begins with fever and a reddish rash. In many cases it clears up on its own, but in children, people suffering from malnutrition and those with weakened immunity it can develop into complications including pneumonia. That is why health authorities usually step up surveillance quickly when a measles outbreak appears.

This time, the count combines two categories — ‘measles and symptoms’. That means measles was confirmed in some of those who died, while in other cases the symptoms matched the disease without confirmed test results coming to light. To understand the true picture, detailed information is therefore needed: how many died in each district, and which age groups have been affected most.

The reports say the death toll has passed 200 across Sylhet Division's four districts — Sylhet, Moulvibazar, Habiganj and Sunamganj. However, a district-by-district breakdown, the period over which the deaths occurred and the total number of infections were not available from official sources by the time this report was written. Once those details emerge, the scale of the outbreak will become clearer.

Vaccination is the most effective protection against measles. When children receive the measles vaccine on schedule, the risk of severe illness falls sharply even during an outbreak. Outbreaks usually grow largest in areas where vaccination coverage is low or where children have missed their doses for some reason.

In situations like this, health specialists generally advise caution on a few points. If a child develops fever together with a rash, red eyes or cold-and-cough symptoms, they should be taken to the nearest health centre without delay; the sick child should be kept apart from others; and the vaccination card should be checked to see whether any dose has been missed. These are the first steps to take.

Responses to outbreaks usually include intensified vaccination drives in affected areas, tracing children who have missed doses, and increased household-level surveillance. Whether any such special programme has begun in Sylhet Division has not yet been officially confirmed.

News that the death toll has passed 200 may renew local demands for awareness about children's vaccination. Past experience shows that after an outbreak, parents crowd vaccination centres — many arriving to complete missed doses.

What is needed most at this moment is reliable, detailed information. How many people have been infected, how many of the dead are children, which areas are worst affected and what treatment arrangements exist in hospitals — publishing these details would allow informed preparation instead of panic.

Barlekha Today is continuing its efforts to gather detailed information on this incident. Official statistics and the health department's statement will be added to a follow-up report once received. For now, the advice to parents is: check whether your child's measles vaccination is complete, and if symptoms appear, seek a doctor's help without delay.
