Three More Children Die of Measles in Sylhet, Taking the Division's Death Toll to 200
Three more children have died of measles in Sylhet. With these deaths, the total number of measles deaths in Sylhet has risen to 200. The latest deaths were reported on Friday (October 23).
The news of three more child deaths has deepened concern across the division about this infectious disease among children. With the total toll now reaching 200, the measles outbreak has become a major public health crisis for Sylhet Division.
The names and ages of the three children who most recently died, and the hospitals where they were being treated, had not been officially released by the time this report was written. A fuller picture of these three deaths will have to await the next official update.
Sylhet is not alone: the current measles wave is claiming children's lives in other parts of the country as well. Also today, another child died with measles symptoms at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital; according to figures given by the hospital's assistant director (administration), Md Mainuddin Khan, 81 children have now died with measles and measles symptoms at that hospital alone, and 39 more children were admitted in the last 24 hours.
Statistics arriving from hospitals at two ends of the country make clear that measles is no longer a set of isolated incidents; it is a widespread outbreak whose biggest victims are children — especially the youngest, many of whom are also suffering complications such as pneumonia alongside measles.
With the death toll in Sylhet Division reaching 200, anxiety among parents locally is understandable. Doctors repeatedly advise that when measles symptoms appear — fever, cough, red eyes and a rash — a child should be taken to hospital without delay, because complications can escalate quickly.
As the outbreak spreads, questions are now being asked about preventive measures — in particular, how far vaccination coverage has reached in the areas where deaths are occurring. A clearer picture will emerge once the details of Sylhet's three new deaths and the division-wide case count are available.
Barlekha Today will continue to bring readers the latest information on this outbreak. Any new official figures from hospitals across Sylhet Division will be published in the next update.
