Throat-slit body of Jubo Mohila League leader Dalia Akter Suma recovered from her Keraniganj flat; police and CID investigating
Police have recovered the throat-slit body of a woman named Mosa. Dalia Akter Suma (50) from her own flat in South Keraniganj, Dhaka. The body was recovered at around 10am on Friday (23 October) from her flat on the third floor of Manowara Plaza Market in the Rasul Pur area of Basta Union.
Dalia Akter Suma was president of the Basta Union Jubo Mohila League and a member of the Dhaka District South Jubo Mohila League. She also worked as a part-time teacher at Baghapur Char Government Primary School, although she had left that job about three months ago.
According to local sources, Dalia Akter's body was lying on the floor of the flat. Blood was spread across the floor of the room, and local residents said footprints were also seen there.
The incident has created a sensation in the area. However, who killed her and why has not yet been confirmed. The killing of a woman who lived alone in an empty flat has created both panic and questions among local people.
Police sources said that after her divorce from her husband Liaqat Ali about 12 years ago, Dalia lived in the flat with her two daughters, Nodi and Liza. The flat was bought by Dalia herself.
As both daughters are now married, she had been living there alone. On Friday morning, acting on information from local residents, police went to the scene and recovered the body.
The victim's younger daughter Liza said: 'What was my mother's crime, that she was killed so brutally? I demand the maximum punishment from the government for those who killed my mother.' Both daughters are devastated by their mother's fate.
Jamilul Haque, additional superintendent of police for the Keraniganj circle, said: 'As soon as we received the news, we rushed to the scene. Members of the CID's crime scene unit are coming to the spot. An investigation is under way into who killed her in the empty house.'
He added that investigators would speak with the victim's children to find out whether she had any dispute with anyone. The investigation is continuing to uncover the motive and identify those involved.
The killing of a political organiser and former part-time teacher has spread both grief and anger in the area. Local residents have demanded the swift identification and arrest of the killers.
The biggest question for the investigation now is — who killed Dalia Akter Suma, and why. Whether the motive was a personal dispute or something else will be answered by the CID crime scene unit's examination and the police investigation.
Further information about the time and manner of the killing will emerge through the legal procedures following the recovery of the body and the post-mortem examination. Police said the investigation is ongoing and identifying those involved is now their main task.
