Three Killed, Two Injured in Head-On Collision of Two Motorcycles on Jessore-Benapole Highway

Staff Reporter

Three people have been killed in a head-on collision between two motorcycles at Natunhat on the Jessore-Benapole highway. Two more people were injured in the incident, and their condition is reported to be critical.

The accident took place late on Friday night (23 October) at Natunhat in Jessore Sadar upazila. All three victims died on the spot in the collision on the highway deep at night.

Two of the dead have been identified. They are Siyam Hossain, son of Shamim Hossain of Mondalgati village in Jessore Sadar upazila, and Ariful Islam Joy, a resident of the Shankarpur area of the town. The name and address of the third deceased person are not yet known.

The two injured are Omar Faruk, son of Abdul Kader of the same area, and Rakib Hasan Rifat, son of Ruhul Amin. They were rescued and admitted to Jessore General Hospital. Both are said to be in critical condition.

According to local sources, on Friday night Siyam Hossain, Omar Faruk and Rakib Hasan Rifat were travelling on the same motorcycle from the Mondalgati area towards Benapole.

When their motorcycle reached the Natunhat area, it collided head-on with another motorcycle coming from the opposite direction. That motorcycle was travelling from Benapole towards Jessore.

Three people died on the spot in the collision. Siyam Hossain was a rider on one motorcycle. The other two deceased were initially reported to be riders of the motorcycle coming from the opposite direction.

The fact that three people were riding on one motorcycle has also come to the fore in this accident. A motorcycle carrying extra riders is risky in terms of control and balance in any case, and that risk increases further on a highway at night.

Officer-in-Charge of Kotwali police station Kabir Hossain confirmed the accident. He said the national identity card of Ariful Islam Joy had been found and efforts were under way to contact his family.

The OC said several police teams were working in the field after the incident. Efforts are also under way to identify the unknown deceased person.

The Jessore-Benapole highway remains busy in any case because of traffic pressure centred on the land port. Motorcycle accidents on this road at night are not new, but the death of three people at once has cast a shadow of grief over the area.

The injured Omar Faruk and Rakib Hasan Rifat are undergoing treatment at Jessore General Hospital. All eyes are now on improvement in their condition and on identifying the unknown deceased.
