Kriti Sanon Voices Fear Over AI, Calls for Laws That Keep Pace With Technology
It is becoming harder by the day to tell whether a picture seen online is real or created with artificial intelligence (AI). Bollywood actress Kriti Sanon believes this situation is increasing the risks to personal rights and the misuse of images. In her view, as technology advances rapidly, laws must change at the same pace.
Speaking recently at the NDTV World Summit 2026 in a session titled 'The Making of a Modern Star', Kriti spoke openly about her concerns over AI.
Kriti said, 'AI scares me. I think many people are scared of it. But I believe it is a tool, not a destination. The thing is, it is like a very sharp tool. And the sharper a tool is, the more dangerous it can be.'
Although she supports technological development and new innovation, Kriti believes laws must be modernised alongside. In her words, it is not enough for technology alone to move forward — the law must move forward with it.
She said, 'I am in favour of technology and new innovation. But in the end, the law also has to move forward with technology. How prepared we are for what AI can actually do, I don't know. On personal rights, the matter is very frightening to me. What is seen online is truly scary.'
The actress also remarked that distinguishing between AI-generated images and real ones is becoming increasingly difficult. 'AI-generated images now look almost like real ones. The difference between the two is very small. We are not really prepared for where AI will end up in the future. There need to be some laws in this area,' she said.
Kriti also raised the limitations of the systems for reporting when someone's image is created or misused with AI on social media. She indicated that the complaint processes were not designed with this new kind of misuse in mind.
Citing Instagram as an example, she said, 'Honestly, if I want to report something on Instagram, there is no option where I can say, this is my image created with AI, so it should be reported and removed. We still cannot move as fast as technology.'
Incidents of celebrities' images and voices being faked with AI are no longer rare, and ordinary people are not outside the same risk. Kriti's comments have brought that debate back to the fore — how far laws and platform policies lag behind the speed of technology.
The core of the actress's message is simple: AI cannot be stopped, but laws and institutional systems must prepare now to prevent its misuse. Otherwise, in an age where the line between real and fake is disappearing, protecting a person's image and identity will only get harder.
