Four School Students Missing from Cumilla Rescued in Habiganj, Relief for Families

Staff Reporter

Four school students who went missing from Cumilla have been rescued in Habiganj. The fact that they disappeared from a district outside the division and were found in a district of another division has ended a long period of anxiety for their families, while also raising fresh questions about the safety of children and teenagers.

The missing students are from Cumilla. They went missing from there and were later traced to Habiganj district in Sylhet Division. Reports say all four were found safe after the rescue — and that, for their families, is the greatest relief of all.

Whenever a child or school student goes missing, a family is plunged into extreme anxiety. Every hour passes in uncertainty — where the child is, who they are with, whether they have fallen into danger — and parents and relatives grow restless with such questions. The families of these four Cumilla students had to pass through that same difficult time.

Habiganj is an important district of Sylhet Division. The distance from Cumilla to Habiganj is not small; disappearing from one district and turning up in a district of another division suggests they travelled a considerable way in the intervening period. Exactly how and by which route they reached Habiganj had not been reported in detail by the time this report was written.

In missing-child rescues generally, information from local people, prompt action by the administration and descriptions provided by families play an important role. In many cases, the awareness of a passer-by, a transport worker or local residents becomes the lead that makes a rescue possible. It is reasonable to assume similar alertness lay behind the identification and rescue of these four students in Habiganj.

Incidents of students going missing are not new in the country. Sometimes they leave with friends on an outing, sometimes out of hurt feelings or fear, and sometimes they fall victim to deception or enticement — for many reasons, teenagers end up far from home. Whatever the reason, the risks for them grow sharply in unfamiliar surroundings outside the home.

Experts repeatedly say that as soon as a child is reported missing, the most urgent step is to inform the nearest police station without delay and begin the search with photographs and descriptions. The first few hours are the most valuable in such cases, because during that time they are usually still in nearby areas.

For school-going children, communication between school and family also plays a major role. The habit of checking quickly when a student does not arrive at school or is late returning home helps prevent much bigger tragedies. This incident is a reminder of that vigilance once again.

The most important task now is the process of returning the four rescued students in Habiganj to their families. Attention also needs to be paid to their physical condition and state of mind after the rescue, because such an experience can leave a deep mark at a young age.

The incident also carries a message for the people of Sylhet Division. If unfamiliar children or teenagers are seen wandering alone, or if anyone's behaviour seems suspicious, informing the local administration is the duty of every conscientious citizen. Many rescue operations begin from just such a small piece of information.

In the end, the safe rescue of the four students has brought relief back to their families. But the incident has shown, once again, how essential the vigilance and awareness of family, school and society all are to keeping children safe.
