Sylhet Deputy Commissioner's Shoes Stolen at Shahjalal Shrine, Stirring Local Talk
An embarrassing incident has been reported at the shrine of Hazrat Shahjalal (RA) in Sylhet — the shoes of Sylhet's Deputy Commissioner were stolen from the shrine premises. The fact that the district's top administrative official fell victim to such a theft has sparked widespread local discussion.
Shoes going missing from the area where worshippers and visitors leave their footwear at the shrine is nothing new. But this time, with the Deputy Commissioner himself reportedly affected, the long-standing problem has come back into focus.
The Hazrat Shahjalal (RA) shrine is one of Sylhet's most important religious sites. Thousands of people from across the country visit it every day, and visitors have long complained that petty thefts occasionally take place amid the crowds.
Many believe such incidents happen because the shoe-keeping area lacks constant supervision. Although there are designated arrangements for storing footwear at the shrine, keeping watch during peak crowds becomes difficult.
No official statement had been received from the shrine authorities or the district administration by the time this report was written. Whether the pair of shoes was recovered, or anyone was detained, could not be confirmed either.
Local residents hope that after this incident involving the administration's top official, fresh thought will be given to security and footwear storage at the shrine, so that ordinary visitors do not have to face the same ordeal.
Shoe theft at religious sites is a familiar problem in Bangladesh. Many worshippers have had the experience of losing their shoes during prayers at mosques and shrines and walking home barefoot.
This incident has drawn attention to that old problem once again — this time, the victim is the district's chief administrative officer himself.
