Deep Depression in the Bay of Bengal: Cyclone Feared Within 48 Hours as Alert Is Issued

Staff Reporter

A low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a deep depression, and there are fears it could develop into a cyclone within the next 48 hours. An alert has been issued in connection with the powerful weather system over the sea, according to reports.

The system first formed as a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal. It then gradually gathered strength and turned into a deep depression. When a low intensifies into a deep depression, it means wind rotation and the tendency for rainfall over that part of the sea have increased considerably.

Weather analysis suggests that if conditions remain favourable, this deep depression could strengthen further over the next 48 hours and take the form of a cyclone. It is with that possibility in mind that the advance alert has been issued, so that coastal residents and vessels at sea have time to prepare.

When a cyclone threatens, it is the coastal communities that face the greatest risk. The lives and livelihoods of people across Bangladesh's vast southern coastline, its chars and its sea-dependent communities are directly affected by every such weather situation. Concern has therefore grown among coastal residents since the alert was issued.

Under the influence of a deep depression, the sea can become rough while gusty winds and rainfall may increase in coastal areas. However, as of the writing of this report, no specific information was available about the system's likely track, a possible landfall area, or its wind speeds.

October is known as one of the cyclone-forming seasons in the Bay of Bengal. At this time of year, warm sea water and wind conditions favour cyclone formation, and several powerful cyclones have struck the coast in this season in the past. That is why any depression in October is watched with special attention.

In situations like this, coastal residents are advised to keep an eye on the latest weather bulletins once an alert is issued. For fishers and others whose livelihoods depend on the sea in particular, knowing the state of the sea is directly a matter of life and livelihood.

The news of a deep depression is also important for administrative preparedness. When cyclone fears rise, questions such as keeping cyclone shelters ready in coastal districts, alerting volunteers and preparing disaster management usually come to the fore. No specific word of such preparations in this instance was known yet.

According to meteorologists, once a system reaches the deep depression stage, its next course depends on sea warmth, pressure patterns and surrounding weather conditions. The next 48 hours are therefore a crucial period for this system.

All eyes are now on the meteorological department's next special bulletin. Whether the deep depression really becomes a cyclone, and if so in which direction it moves and how far warning signals are raised for the coast — the answers will come in updated information over the coming hours. Any change in the situation will be reported by this paper.
