BGB seizes 39kg of cannabis in Habiganj operation, one man detained

Staff Reporter

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has seized 39 kilograms of cannabis in an operation in Habiganj. One person was detained during the raid, according to reports.

Habiganj, a border district in Sylhet Division, sees regular BGB drives against drug trafficking and smuggling. This latest operation again recovered a large quantity of cannabis.

The seized amount — 39 kilograms — is no small consignment. The recovery of such a large quantity at once has again raised questions about the scale of drug dealing in the area.

The detained man is believed to be under questioning. However, details about his identity or the exact location of the operation were not immediately available.

There have long been allegations of drugs and goods being smuggled through the border areas of Habiganj and the wider Sylhet Division. Border guards regularly intercept such consignments.

BGB operations in Habiganj have previously seized cannabis and beer and led to arrests. These continuing drives are putting pressure on drug traffickers in the border belt.

Legal action against the detained man under the Narcotics Control Act is under way, according to sources. The seized cannabis remains in BGB custody.

The BGB has said in previous operations that such anti-drug drives will continue. Residents of the border areas have also long demanded stronger action against smuggling.

This report will be updated when the BGB formally releases further details of the operation.
