Indian Goods Seized at Sylhet Border as Guards Step Up Anti-Smuggling Drive

Indian goods have been seized in a raid in the Sylhet border area. News of the seizure emerged on Saturday (24 October). The goods, brought in illegally across the border, were confiscated, according to relevant sources.

The border in the Sylhet region is long and, in many places, difficult terrain. There are frequent allegations of attempts to smuggle Indian goods through border points in upazilas including Zakiganj, Kanaighat, Gowainghat, Companiganj and Beanibazar.

Smuggled consignments typically include saris and readymade garments, cosmetics, essentials such as sugar and onions, narcotics and cattle. Such illegal goods cost the government revenue on the one hand and harm local legitimate traders on the other.

Border guards carry out regular patrols and raids based on intelligence. Seized goods are usually handed over to the customs authorities under the rules or disposed of through auction.

Locals allege that some influential syndicates in the border area are involved in smuggling, which is why the activity does not stop entirely despite raids. They have demanded stricter surveillance at the border and exemplary action against those involved.
