Young woman gang-raped after going to meet boyfriend in Kendua, three including boyfriend detained
A 19-year-old woman has allegedly been gang-raped in Kendua upazila of Netrokona after travelling there to meet her boyfriend. Following her complaint, police detained three young men, including the boyfriend.
The incident took place on Saturday night (24 October) at the Eidgah field of Kashipur village in Chirang Union of the upazila. After receiving the complaint, police raided the area at dawn on Sunday and detained the three accused.
The detainees are Billal (22), son of Mangal Mia of Kashipur village; Harun (27), son of Rustam Ali; and Rubel (25), son of Ekhlas Mia. Among them, Billal was the victim's boyfriend, according to police and local sources.
Police and local sources said the young woman had been in a relationship with Billal. On Saturday night, she travelled from Ishwarganj to Kendua in connection with that relationship. Billal then took her to the Eidgah field in Kashipur village.
According to the complaint, Billal called his two friends Harun and Rubel to the spot, and the three gang-raped her. They then left her there and fled, the complaint states.
The victim went to the police station that same night and lodged a complaint against Billal and the other two. Acting on her complaint, police moved quickly and detained the three accused in a dawn raid on Sunday.
A case was recorded at the police station on Sunday morning based on the young woman's complaint. Police said the victim herself is the plaintiff in the case.
Sajal Sarkar, inspector (investigation) of Kendua Police Station, said the victim had filed the case herself against the three men. The detainees were shown arrested in that case and sent to court on Sunday noon.
The incident has caused a stir in the area. Local residents expressed anger and concern that a young woman was called in through a relationship of familiarity and trust and then allegedly subjected to such an attack.
Police say the investigation into the case is under way, and the legal process concerning the arrested men will proceed according to the court's next directions. All aspects of the incident will be examined in the investigation, they added.
