SUST Student Munira Dies in Hospital After Bus and Covered Van Collide on Dhaka-Sylhet Highway

Staff Reporter

Munira, a student of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST), has died after being seriously injured in a road accident while returning to campus from Dinajpur. She died of cardiac arrest on Saturday night (24 October) while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Dhaka.

Munira was a student of the university's 2025-26 academic session. The accident on her journey back to the Sylhet campus cost her her life.

According to sources in her department at the university, a passenger bus collided head-on with a covered van on Saturday morning at Bertala in Sarail upazila of Brahmanbaria, on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway.

Two people were killed on the spot in that collision. At least 15 people were injured, and Munira was among the seriously injured.

After the accident, the seriously injured Munira was taken by ambulance to Dhaka for advanced treatment. She was being treated at Bangladesh Multicare Hospital there.

Junaid, a student of the university's Political Studies department who was with her, said Munira was sent to Dhaka after being injured in the accident at around 7am on Saturday. She later died of cardiac arrest while under treatment at the hospital.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Khairul Islam expressed deep grief over Munira's death, saying the university was deeply saddened by her untimely passing.

The Vice-Chancellor also said he had stayed in regular contact with Junaid since learning of the incident, and that teachers and alumni of the Civil Engineering department went to the hospital immediately.

Senior teacher of the department Professor Dr Md Zahir Bin Alam was also present at the hospital, the Vice-Chancellor said — meaning members of the university family tried to stand beside the injured student as quickly as they could after hearing the news.

The loss of a young student on the road in this way has cast a pall of grief over the university's teachers, students and her classmates. No one could have imagined that a journey back to campus would turn into a final journey.

With Munira's death, the toll from the Bertala collision on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway — including the two killed on the spot — has risen further. There is also concern about the treatment and condition of the at least 15 injured.

Munira's death has once again exposed the horror of head-on collisions between passenger buses and cargo vehicles on the highway. The university family is now coping with the grief of her untimely death.
