Mbappe Brace at Camp Nou Ends Barcelona's Winning Run as Real Madrid Win El Clasico 2-1
Barcelona: Real Madrid beat Barcelona 2-1 at Camp Nou in the first El Clasico of the Spanish La Liga season. Kylian Mbappe scored both goals to decide the match. The defeat was Barcelona's first loss of the current season.
The opening goal came in the 41st minute, four minutes before the end of the first half. Barca defender Martin made a mistake while trying to clear a cross from Ian Diomande on the right flank. The ball struck Mbappe as he ran in from the left, and that unintentional touch sent the ball into the net to put Real Madrid ahead.
Mbappe's scoring run at Camp Nou continued in this match as well. It was the French forward's 13th goal in 11 matches at this ground.
Raphinha brought Barcelona level in the 61st minute of the second half. His goal raised hopes of a comeback for Hansi Flick's side at Camp Nou, but the level score did not last until the end of the match.
Mbappe scored his second goal in the 87th minute. That goal put Jose Mourinho's Real Madrid ahead again, and the first El Clasico of the season ended 2-1.
The defeat also ended Barcelona's run of consecutive wins. After nine straight league wins, this was their first loss. A win in this match would have given Barca a record of 10 consecutive wins at the start of a La Liga season, but that chance slipped away.
Barcelona also failed to pass Real Madrid in the record books. Real Madrid won all of their first nine matches in the 1968-69 season. Barca equalled that number this time but could not move past Real's record.
The loss also broke Barcelona's home run at Camp Nou. After 23 consecutive home league wins, Barcelona lost at Camp Nou for the first time in that run.
Despite the defeat, Barcelona remain top of the points table. With this win, Real Madrid sit third in the table, just three points behind their arch-rivals.
