Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) administrator Bir Muktijoddha Md Abdus Salam has said a special programme will soon be launched to evict illegal hawkers from the main roads of New Market and surrounding areas. He said no one will be allowed to sit on the main roads.

He announced the programme on Monday (26 October) while chairing an exchange-of-views meeting at the Kalabagan Green Road Staff Quarter auditorium in the capital. The meeting was organised by civil society of the Dhanmondi, Kalabagan, New Market, Ramna and Shahbagh areas (wards 15 to 21).

The administrator said those who follow discipline will be given an alternative arrangement modelled on the night market in Motijheel. He also said the main roads will not be allowed to be occupied in any way.

He also warned that strict action will be taken against city corporation officials and employees who neglect citizen services. In his words, receiving services is a fundamental right of citizens, and if any official or employee is negligent in duty or fails to meet citizens' needs, strict administrative action will be taken without delay if it is reported directly.

Mentioning waterlogging as one of the main problems of Dhaka South, the administrator said the complication existed before they took charge and relentless work is under way to resolve it.

Speaking as chief guest at the meeting, road transport minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam said it is not possible for the city corporation alone to solve all the city's problems and public engagement is essential. He said ward-based solutions must be found to develop the city and the government is working for overall development without considering small and personal interests.

DSCC chief executive officer Md Khaybar Rahman, chief engineer Nur Azizur Rahman, chief waste management officer Air Commodore Md Mahbubur Rahman Talukdar and chief health officer Dr Jahane Ferdous Binte Rahman, along with other concerned officials, were present at the meeting.
