Whip Dulu at Press Club: 'You come — the people of the country are waiting for you'

Staff Reporter

National Parliament Whip Advocate M. Ruhul Quddus Talukder Dulu has said: 'You (Sheikh Hasina) come, we are waiting for you. The people of Bangladesh are waiting for you.' He made the remark as chief guest at a discussion meeting on the return to the country of the ousted former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, held on Monday (26 October) at the Maulana Mohammad Akram Khan Hall of the National Press Club.

He also said that after a long struggle of nearly 20 years, a democratic government has taken responsibility for the people, and so public expectations of this government are high. In this country of a fragile economy, the government is working tirelessly to meet those expectations, he said.

He sought sincere cooperation from the opposition parties that fought together in the movement to restore democracy, so that the government can be given the opportunity to work comfortably.

Ruhul Quddus Dulu said that for the past nearly 20 years, democracy and a fair electoral system were absent in the country and the people's voting rights had been taken away. Through the movement, blood and long sacrifice of students, the public and various political parties, the country has been freed from fascism, and people have regained democracy and the right to speak freely.

He said the economy had been damaged by the previous government's unlimited looting and money laundering. The current government has begun implementing welfare plans such as distributing family cards and agriculture cards, and bringing imams and those in charge of religious places of worship under allowances, to ensure the social and economic self-reliance of ordinary people.

Calling on the opposition parties, he said everyone must remain alert so that the democracy achieved is not endangered again. He urged everyone, government and opposition alike, to stay united to continue the democratic course and rebuild the economy, without giving the defeated fascist force any opportunity.

The discussion meeting, chaired by Ramiz Uddin Kazi, was also addressed by special guests Mostafa Kamal Majumdar and Member of Parliament Shawkat Ara Akter Urmi. Various political personalities and journalists were present.
