The high-level task force formed under the Home Ministry is verifying information received from various sources in the murder case of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi. For that reason, the special investigation team has again sought time from the High Court to submit its investigation report.

A report informing the court of the investigation's progress has meanwhile been filed. The progress report mentions the verification of various pieces of investigation information.

Tuesday (27 October) was the scheduled date for submitting the investigation report in the case. The matter is before a High Court bench of Justice Shikdar Mahmuddur Razi and Justice Fatema Anwar for orders. However, an application seeking time was made on behalf of the task force before the scheduled date.

Earlier, on 30 September 2024, the High Court ordered the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) to be removed from the investigation of the Sagar-Runi murder case and a high-level task force to be formed under the Home Ministry. It also ordered the investigation report to be submitted by 6 April 2025.

The Home Ministry later formed the task force in line with the court's direction. However, there was no progress on the scheduled date because the High Court was on vacation that day.

Subsequently, on the state's applications, time was given three more times, six months each, on 22 April, 23 October and 26 April this year. Following that sequence, the case has again come up on the High Court's cause list.

On the night of 11 February 2012, journalist couple Sagar Sarowar, news editor of Maasranga Television, and Meherun Runi, senior reporter of ATN Bangla, were murdered in their rented home in West Rajabazar in the capital. Their mutilated bodies were recovered the next morning.

After the incident, on 12 February, Runi's brother Nowsher Ali Roman filed a murder case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station in the capital as the complainant.

Even after a long time has passed, the investigation report in this widely discussed murder case has not been submitted. Even after the investigation was handed to a high-level task force, time has been sought several times to submit the report.

The task force's new application for time and the progress report it filed on Tuesday's scheduled date are before the High Court bench of Justice Shikdar Mahmuddur Razi and Justice Fatema Anwar for orders.
