Rain forecast for seven divisions as Cyclone Arnab advances, temperatures may fall

Staff Reporter

The Meteorological Department has forecast rain or thundershowers with gusty winds in seven divisions of the country under the influence of Cyclone 'Arnab'. Day and night temperatures across the country may also fall slightly.

Meteorologist Dr Muhammad Abul Kalam Mallik of the Meteorological Department gave the information in the forecast for the 48 hours from 6pm on Tuesday (27 October).

The forecast said rain or thundershowers with temporary gusty winds may occur at some places in Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions today. Elsewhere in the country the sky may be partly cloudy but the weather may remain mainly dry.

On the second day, Wednesday (28 October), rain or thundershowers with temporary gusty winds are likely at many places in Rajshahi, Khulna and Barishal divisions and at one or two places in Rangpur, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions. Day and night temperatures across the country may fall slightly that day as well.

The synoptic situation said the very severe cyclonic storm 'Arnab', located over the west-central Bay of Bengal and adjoining area, is moving west-northwestwards. At noon on Tuesday the cyclone was in the same area. It may move further west-northwestwards and cross India's Andhra Pradesh coast by Wednesday noon.

Under the cyclone's influence, deep convective clouds are forming over the north Bay of Bengal. Because of this, gusty or squally winds may blow over the north Bay and Bangladesh's coastal areas.

In addition, a mild heatwave is sweeping over Pabna, Sirajganj, Cumilla, Chandpur, Feni, Lakshmipur, Bhola and Barishal districts, as well as Dhaka, Khulna, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions. The mild heatwave sweeping over several districts and divisions may abate.

In the last 24 hours, the country's highest rainfall was recorded at Sitakunda, at 31 millimetres. In the same period, the highest temperature was recorded at Faridpur, at 37.5 degrees Celsius, and the lowest at Tetulia, at 15.4 degrees Celsius.
