Wife in Bhola's Borhanuddin Donates Her Kidney to Save Husband Kabir Mir; Both Recovering Well

Halima Khatun of Borhanuddin upazila in Bhola has donated one of her kidneys to save her husband's life. Doctors had told the family that Kabir Mir, whose two kidneys had failed completely, could not survive without a transplant.
The recipient, Kabir Mir, is the eldest son of Delwar Mir of Bathanbari village in Sachra union of the upazila. The couple have two young children.
According to the family, Kabir Mir fell suddenly ill last June and was taken to a doctor. After various tests, doctors found that both his kidneys were completely damaged. They said his life could not be saved unless a kidney was transplanted quickly.
The family then began searching for a donor, but despite much effort none could be found. At that point, his wife Halima Begum announced that she would give one of her own kidneys to save her husband.
Kabir Mir's younger brother Riaz Mir said Kabir had been under the close observation of doctors for several months at the Centre for Kidney Diseases and Urology (CKD) Hospital in Shyamoli, Dhaka.
On the night of Monday, 26 October, the transplant was carried out under the supervision of kidney transplant specialist Professor Dr Md Kamrul Islam. A kidney from Halima Begum was successfully transplanted into Kabir Mir's body.
Both husband and wife are now well and remain under doctors' observation, the family said. The wife's decision has been widely praised by neighbours and relatives.
