Three people were killed when a passenger bus rammed into the back of a parked dump truck on the Dhaka-Rangpur highway in Mithapukur, Rangpur. The dead include a bus helper and two passengers.

The accident happened at around 5 am on Wednesday (October 28) in front of the Shah Amanat petrol pump at Bairagiganj Bazar in Mithapukur upazila.

According to Boro Dorga Highway Police and eyewitnesses, a Kurigram-bound Khan Express bus hit the parked dump truck hard from behind on the highway. Several bus passengers were killed or injured.

One person died at the scene. Two more died after being taken to hospital.

Several others were injured in the incident. On receiving the news, police and Fire Service members, with the help of local people, rescued the injured and sent them to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, where they were admitted.

Boro Dorga Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Moazzem Uddin said that among the three dead, one was the bus helper and the other two were passengers. Their names and identities were not immediately known.

The OC said the bodies of two of the dead are at Rangpur Medical College Hospital. The other body was taken to the police station. Arrangements are under way to remove the two accident-hit vehicles.

Local residents complained that illegally parking trucks on the highway is increasing the risk of accidents. Police said legal action would be taken over the incident.
