Barcelona Fined 602 Euros for Approaching Atletico's Alvarez

Staff Reporter

The Spanish football federation has fined Barcelona 602 euros, about 670 dollars, over its contact with Argentine forward Julian Alvarez, following a complaint by Atletico Madrid.

Atletico accused Barcelona of approaching Alvarez without first notifying them in writing. Alvarez's contract with Atletico runs until June 2030.

The sanction falls under Article 133 of the federation's regulations. Atletico also complained to FIFA, which declared it had no jurisdiction over the case.

Alvarez himself recently scored on the pitch for Atletico. He scored Atletico's winner against Deportivo La Coruna on Saturday, finding the net for a second successive match as his side moved within two points of La Liga leaders Barcelona.

After scoring, Alvarez apologised for expressing his desire to join their rivals. He said it was a mistake and that he understands why the fans are angry, adding that if he were a fan, he would be angry too, especially given how they have supported him since he arrived.

In an interview during the 2026 World Cup, Alvarez said he wanted to fulfil his dream of playing for Barcelona, triggering a transfer dispute that stretched through the summer transfer window.

Frequently booed by the home fans this season, Alvarez received a standing ovation from sections of the crowd after scoring on Saturday, a sign of a thawing relationship with the Metropolitano faithful.

Alvarez joined Atletico from Manchester City in 2024 in a deal worth up to 95 million euros, about 111 million dollars.

After scoring 36 goals in 103 appearances at Manchester City, Alvarez has registered 51 goals in 115 games for Atletico.
