At least 30 people have been killed in a collision between two high-speed trains near Toledo in central Spain. Reuters reported the figure on Wednesday, citing a spokesperson for the regional government.

Rail operator Adif said the collision involved two high-speed trains. In a message on the X platform, Adif said train services were suspended on the Madrid-Andalusia high-speed line after the crash.

A spokesperson for the Castilla-La Mancha regional government said that shortly after 9 a.m. local time, a train of the state company Renfe collided with a train of the private operator Iryo.

The spokesperson said two carriages of the Iryo train were derailed in the collision.

Adif said the accident happened between the towns of Mora and Orgaz. The trains were travelling from Madrid towards Seville.

The regional government spokesperson also said the death toll could rise. He did not give details about the injured, however.

Manuel Galan, mayor of the town of Urda near Toledo, said the emergency services had asked him to keep a sports hall ready to accommodate injured people.
