Indian infrastructure company Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has won a contract worth about one hundred crore dollars — about $1 billion — for the design and construction of two system packages on Dhaka Metro Rail Line-1. The company gave the information in an announcement to the stock market.

According to the announcement, the contract covers rail line construction, electrical systems, signalling, telecommunications and installation of platform screen doors.

Dhaka Metro Rail Line-1 is Bangladesh's first underground metro rail project. It will run from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport through Rampura, Malibag and Rajarbagh to Kamalapur. A branch line will then go towards Purbachal.

L&T is described in the report as an industrial group engaged in engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) as well as high-technology manufacturing.

The company said it won these contracts in continuation of its previous work in Bangladesh. Earlier it had won and completed the integrated railway system package for the country's first metro corridor, Dhaka Metro Rail Line-6.

The cabinet committee on government purchases has approved eight construction packages for Metro Rail Line-1 and Line-5 (northern route). The value of those packages is about 58,500 crore taka. L&T's announcement of winning the contract came after that.

L&T classified the combined contracts as a 'large' order under its standard reporting framework. In that framework, contracts worth 5,000 crore to 10,000 crore rupees are defined as a 'large' order.

Apart from the Indian company, contractors from Japan, China and Bangladesh have also won work on the two metro lines. The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is financing the projects.
