Canada Women End Eight-Game Skid Against USA, Avenging Olympic Heartbreak with 5-3 Win
Canada's women's ice hockey team has ended an eight-game losing streak against the United States, winning 5-3 on Wednesday night in Windsor, Ontario, in a rematch of February's Olympic gold-medal game.
Newcomers Caitlin Kraemer and Rosalie Tremblay scored their first senior international goals in the win, which was Canada's first victory over their archrivals since 2025.
Eight months ago in Milan, the Americans snatched Olympic gold after captain Hilary Knight scored the equalizer with 2:04 remaining in regulation and Megan Keller struck in overtime to deny Canada a fifth Olympic title.
At the WFCU Centre, Daryl Watts opened the scoring on a first-period power play, before Kraemer, 20, doubled the lead off a pass from Nicole Gosling.
Knight pulled a goal back for the Americans at 5:37 of the second period, but Tremblay, an 18-year-old freshman at the University of Wisconsin, restored Canada's two-goal advantage just over four minutes later with a rebound goal.
The Americans mounted their comeback in the third period, with Abbey Murphy cutting the deficit to 3-2 at 3:48 before Caroline Harvey tied the game at 7:53.
Sarah Fillier scored the winner with 8:15 remaining in the third period, shooting high past US goaltender Aerin Frankel, and Laura Stacey added an empty-net goal with six seconds left. Canada goaltender Ann-Renée Desbiens made several late saves to preserve the lead.
The match was the first of two exhibition games ahead of next month's women's world championship in Denmark, which will take place in Herning and Esbjerg from 6 to 16 November.
The Americans entered the two-game series with all 23 members of their Olympic gold-medal team among a 31-player training camp roster. The teams meet again on Friday in Plymouth, Michigan.
