Jahed Ahmed (36), an expatriate from Sylhet, has died at Doha International Airport in Qatar while returning home from Spain. After arriving at the airport on Tuesday night (October 27), he suddenly felt chest pain and was taken to a nearby hospital, where a doctor declared him dead. Doctors believe he died after suffering heart disease.

Jahed Ahmed was the son of Muhibur Rahman of the Jhalopara area of Dakshin Surma in Sylhet city. He was the second of three brothers. He had moved to Spain four years ago in search of a livelihood.

After years of hard work abroad, his fortunes had turned. According to his family members, he had recently received a permanent residence card in Spain, and it was after that he decided to return home.

On Tuesday, Jahed set out from Spain for Bangladesh on a Qatar Airways flight. He fell suddenly ill after reaching Doha International Airport at around midnight Bangladesh time.

When he felt chest pain, the airport authorities took him to hospital. Family members said a doctor there declared him dead.

News of Jahed's death reached his family in Sylhet on Wednesday afternoon (October 28). Grief descended on the family that had been waiting to welcome him home. His wife Jeni Begum has broken down in tears, and his elderly father is also grief-stricken at the loss of his son.

Jahed's uncle Palash Ahmed said the process of bringing his body back to the country is under way. Family members have sought the cooperation of Expatriates' Welfare Minister Ariful Haque Chowdhury to bring the body home quickly.
