Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, has ordered the armed forces to take immediate and effective action, without geographical limits, in response to any possible threat from adversaries. The state news agency IRNA reported the directive.

He gave the order on Saturday (31 October) at a meeting with top military commanders. Khamenei described intelligent military preparedness for a strong confrontation with adversaries as one of the conditions for achieving 'maximum deterrence'.

He said that if enemies carried out military or terrorist attacks again, the armed forces of the Islamic Republic and the Iranian people would determine the time and terms on which those attacks would end.

At the meeting, Mojtaba Khamenei also stressed strengthening Iran's military information systems. He called for the country's own defence capabilities to be reinforced further in military doctrine and strategy.

Iran's supreme leader also discussed increasing modern defence and security capabilities through the use of new technologies.

Khamenei's directives also include a decision to update the 'targets bank', or list of targets. His statement said the aim was to bring all visible and invisible assets of the United States and Israel within reach of Iran's armed forces.
