A case has been filed against unnamed miscreants over the shooting deaths of two political leaders at Pushpapara Hat under Ataikula police station in Pabna Sadar upazila. However, more than 48 hours after the killings, police have not been able to arrest anyone.

Forty-five hours after the incident, at around 4pm on Saturday (31 October), Rubel Hossain, brother of slain Sramik Dal leader Ripon Hossain, filed the case at Ataikula police station as plaintiff. The case number is 23.

Ataikula police station inspector (investigation) Pradip Kumar Saha said 10 to 15 unnamed miscreants have been accused in the case.

Asked about arrests, Pradip Kumar Saha said no one has been arrested yet. Asked whether any clue has been uncovered, he said nothing can be said at this moment, but the investigation is ongoing.

On Thursday (29 October) at around 6:45pm, two people, including the hat’s leaseholder, were killed by gunfire from rivals at Pushpapara Hat under Ataikula police station in Pabna Sadar upazila.

The victims are Abdus Salam Haji (55), convener of the Pabna Sadar upazila unit of Sramik League, whose activities are banned, and the leaseholder of the hat; and his nephew Ripon Hossain (50), president of the Ataikula union unit of Sramik Dal.

Abdus Salam was the son of the late Aroj Ali Bepari of the Dharmagram area. Ripon Hossain was also from the same area, the son of the late Omed Ali. According to local sources, after the mass uprising of 5 August 2024, Abdus Salam had been seen at various Jamaat processions and rallies.

Police and local sources say a dispute had been running between two sides over the lease of Pushpapara Hat. At the time of the incident, the current leaseholder Abdus Salam Haji and his nephew Ripon Hossain were sitting in their office beside the hat, having snacks.

At that moment, several masked men from the rival side arrived, opened fire on them and fled. Local people rescued the two wounded men and rushed them to Pabna General Hospital, but they could not be saved.
