Riots Erupt in Frankfurt After Demonstration: Shops Looted, Barricades Burned, 30 Detained
Police remained on duty in central Frankfurt on Sunday, 1 November, after rioting and looting broke out following a demonstration the previous day. The violence left shopfronts smashed, stores looted, barricades burning and debris scattered across the streets.
According to Euronews, the riots began after a demonstration the previous day. Footage shows smashed shop windows, looted stores, burning barricades and debris strewn across roads. Police used water cannon to extinguish fires and clear obstacles from the streets.
Several protesters and police officers were injured in the violence, and police detained 30 people.
The situation had calmed by early Sunday morning, after police cordoned off parts of the city centre.
Hesse state premier Boris Rhein condemned the violence, saying he was shocked by the events and that those responsible would face consequences.
Violence was also reported elsewhere in Germany. In Cologne, police used water cannon to disperse crowds, and in Berlin protesters attacked officers with bottles and pyrotechnics.
