Shootings near three college communities in the United States over the weekend left one person dead and at least 21 others injured. Police in Indiana, Delaware and Alabama are each investigating the incidents in crowded party areas near the campuses, according to police and university statements.

In Birmingham, Alabama, one person was killed and eight others were wounded on Saturday night near Legion Field after the Magic City Classic football game between Alabama A&M and Alabama State. Birmingham police said officers found nine people with gunshot wounds in the 400 block of Graymont Avenue West shortly after 7:50 p.m. local time.

Police said one victim was in critical condition and seven others were stable. Birmingham Police Chief Michael Pickett said most spectators and families had left the stadium property after the game, but the shooting happened nearby, where vendors were set up along Graymont Avenue. He said he was "very grateful that more people weren't injured."

Police spokesperson De'Rell Freeman said one person had been detained and taken to police headquarters for questioning, and that "multiple weapons" had been found and secured at the scene.

Alabama State and Alabama A&M are historically Black universities and archrivals whose annual contest has been played for more than 100 years. Nearly 70,000 fans attended Saturday's game, which Alabama A&M won 31-28. The event draws some of the largest crowds in the country for games in their college football division.

In Bloomington, Indiana, seven people were hospitalized after a shooting near Indiana University's homecoming festivities. Police said that after midnight, officers monitoring a large crowd around Kirkwood Avenue and Dunn Street heard shots at around 1:30 a.m. and saw a man with a firearm running from the area.

Bloomington police said the man was taken into custody near Dunn Meadow, and a gun and shell casings were recovered in the area. Police said it remains unclear whether the suspect fired any shots. No deaths were reported in Bloomington, and police said they did not know whether there were additional victims. A disturbance in the crowd may have preceded the shooting, police said. Indiana University police and Indiana State Police assisted in the response.

In Newark, Delaware, a shooting on Saturday night rocked the University of Delaware community. The university did not provide a confirmed number of victims or say whether anyone had died, but a report indicated at least six people were hospitalized. The investigation is being led by Newark police.

The university's director of media relations, Peter Bothum, said in a statement: "We are deeply concerned about the shooting on Main Street Saturday night, which has impacted our entire community. We are grateful to the Newark Police Department, which is leading the investigation." He said confirmed information would be shared on the university's dedicated alerts page.

University President Laura Carlson said victims were receiving care. In an email to the school community, she wrote: "We are all impacted. I ask that you keep the victims in your thoughts and hearts as they receive care." She thanked Newark police, campus police and other first responders for providing on-scene care. The school urged students and staff to follow its campus alerts page for confirmed updates.

Beyond the campus-area shootings, police in Dallas said four people were dead and 15 injured following three separate shootings in a Dallas neighborhood. Police Chief Daniel Comeaux said police were still trying to determine whether the shootings were related or what led to them. He said some arrests had been made but did not specify how many or what charges were involved. "This is a really big scene. It's spread out," Comeaux said. "We are interviewing some individuals right now that we have arrested, still trying to figure out exactly how it ties into all the shootings out here."

In Fayetteville, Arkansas, six people were taken to hospitals with gunshot wounds from a shooting early on Sunday. No arrests have been made, police said in a news release. A preliminary investigation indicates an altercation preceded the shooting.
