Tailor killed in beating after asking for return of borrowed motorcycle in Lakshmipur, son injured
A tailor businessman named Hossain Mia, 50, was killed in an attack and beating on Sunday night (November 1) at Kazirdighirpar Bazar in Uttar Hamchadi Union of Lakshmipur Sadar Upazila, after going to ask for the return of a borrowed motorcycle.
His son Saiful Islam, a village doctor, was also beaten and injured when he tried to intervene. The victim's family has accused Shakil Hossain of the same area and his followers of the killing.
Hossain Mia was the son of Sultan Ahmed Bhuiyan of the Kazirdighirpar area and a tailor businessman at the local market. Local sources said he had previously been suffering from heart disease.
According to police and the victim's relatives, on the afternoon of October 18 Shakil borrowed the motorcycle used by Saiful for a short while. Despite various excuses, he did not return it even after 13 days had passed.
On the night of the incident, Saiful, his father Hossain Mia and several local people went together to Shakil to bring back the motorcycle. An argument began between the two sides over returning it.
The family alleges that at one stage Shakil and his followers became enraged and attacked Hossain Mia and Saiful. Both father and son were seriously injured in the attack.
Local people later rescued them and took them quickly to Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital, where the doctor on duty declared Hossain Mia dead.
Dr Zahurul Islam Roni, medical officer at Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital, said Hossain Mia had been brought to the hospital dead. The actual cause of death could be confirmed once the post-mortem report is received.
Wahid Parvez, officer-in-charge of Lakshmipur Sadar Model Police Station, said the body has been kept at the Sadar Hospital morgue for post-mortem. A police operation to arrest the accused is continuing and preparations for a case over the incident are under way.
