Dhaka's air is unhealthy today, fifth among the world's most polluted cities

Staff Reporter

Dhaka ranks fifth today on the list of the world's cities with polluted air. Its air quality index score is 164, and the air has been categorised as unhealthy.

The figures appeared on IQAir, the Switzerland-based air quality website, at 8:15 a.m. on Monday, 2 November.

At the top of the list is Pakistan's capital Lahore, with a score of 493.

Second in air pollution today is India's capital New Delhi with a score of 219. Egypt's capital Cairo is third with 212, and Kolkata, capital of India's West Bengal, is fourth with 169.

The Switzerland-based organisation IQAir provides a live, real-time index of how clean or polluted a city's air is.

Under the organisation's standards, a score between zero and 50 means the air quality is considered good, while 51 to 100 is considered moderate or tolerable.

A score of 101 to 150 is considered unhealthy for sensitive groups, and 151 to 200 is classed as unhealthy, which is the band Dhaka's score of 164 falls into today. A score of 201 to 300 is very unhealthy, and anything above 301 is considered hazardous.
