Jahangir Alam, the Gazipur correspondent of private satellite television channel Deepto TV, has been attacked while collecting news of a workers' protest in Gazipur. Agitating workers have been accused of beating him and snatching his bag, camera and other valuable equipment used for journalism.

The incident took place on Sunday (1 November) at around 1:30 pm in the Palli Bidyut area of Kaliakair upazila in Gazipur, on the Dhaka-Tangail highway. Workers of various garment factories had been protesting on the highway since morning, demanding a wage increase.

Journalist Jahangir Alam said he had been collecting news of the movement since morning. At noon, while he was recording video in the Palli Bidyut area, several workers asked about his identity and questioned why he was filming.

He said that at one stage several workers rushed at him to beat him, and he ran into a nearby alley to save his life and tried to take shelter there. But the agitated workers chased him into the alley and beat him there.

During the beating, the attackers took away his camera and other valuable equipment along with the bag on his shoulder. Jahangir Alam later took shelter in a house inside that alley.

The attack on a journalist who had gone to collect news, and the snatching of his camera, took place amid this workers' protest demanding a wage increase. Jahangir Alam said he remained sheltered in the house inside the alley after the attack.
