The Philadelphia Eagles' free-fall in the US NFL continues. They lost 27-10 to the Washington Commanders in Sunday night's game, their sixth straight defeat.

The start belonged to the Eagles. Jake Elliott hit a 40-yard field goal, and after a Washington turnover Saquon Barkley scored on a three-yard run, putting the Eagles ahead 10-0.

But Philadelphia never scored again after that lead. Washington collected 27 unanswered points to take the game away.

Quarterback Jayden Daniels and kicker Drew Stevens led Washington's comeback. Late in the first quarter, Stevens hit a 56-yard field goal.

In the second quarter, Daniels found Stefon Diggs for an eight-yard touchdown pass. Stevens added a 39-yard kick before halftime to put Washington up 13-10.

At the centre of the Eagles' problems was the absence of quarterback Jalen Hurts. His replacement, Tanner McKee, looked like a backup all night — holding the ball, taking sacks, refusing to throw downfield and turning the ball over twice, according to the match report.

Without Hurts, Washington stacked the box against the run and held Barkley to just 30 yards on 13 carries.

The turning point came in the third quarter. Dorance Armstrong strip-sacked McKee and Charles Omenihu recovered the fumble. On the next play Daniels hit Treylon Burks for 53 yards, setting up a 25-yard Stevens field goal.

When Philadelphia finally drove into scoring position in the fourth quarter, its own mistakes wiped out the chance. Elliott's apparent 36-yard field goal would have cut the deficit to three, but an illegal formation penalty on left tackle Jordan Mailata took the points off the board. Backed up five yards, Elliott then missed wide right.

Washington closed the game out late. Stevens kicked a 42-yard field goal with 3:43 left. On the next possession, Commanders cornerback Rasul Douglas intercepted McKee.

Rachaad White broke off a 33-yard run and scored from a yard out with 1:52 remaining. Austin Ekeler then ran in a two-point conversion to make it 27-10.

Daniels finished with 217 passing yards, one touchdown and no turnovers. The loss drops Philadelphia to 2-6, while Washington improves to 2-4-1 and climbs out of last place in the NFC East.
