Friend Dip Remanded for Four Days in Ex-Air Force Officer Tahsif Murder Case
A court has remanded Ahmed Shahriar Reza Dip, described as a 'junior friend' of retired Bangladesh Air Force officer K M Tahsif Sauri, for four days of questioning in the murder case filed over Tahsif's death.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Hasib Ullah Pias passed the remand order on Saturday afternoon (October 31) after a hearing, during which the additional public prosecutor argued in favour of remand for the prosecution.
Earlier at noon, Inspector Firoz Uddin of the Tongi outpost of the naval police, the case's investigating officer, produced Dip before the court and sought seven days of remand.
The application stated that on the evening of October 27, it was Dip who called Tahsif out of a flat in Sector 18 under Turag police station. Tahsif had been missing since then.
The next afternoon, October 28, Tahsif's body was recovered from the Turag river near Rajabari Ghat under Uttarkhan police station. He was identified through the iPhone found in his pocket.
The investigating officer further stated in the application that information technology and investigation revealed Dip had taken Tahsif to the Mazar Basti area under Tongi West police station on the day of the incident. Sources connected with the investigation said Dip spent about six hours with Tahsif before he mysteriously went missing; because he was with him for a long time in the final hours, he was brought under the law in this case.
According to the application, Dip admitted a friendly relationship with the victim in preliminary questioning, but the investigation found clear evidence of his direct involvement in the killing.
The remand was sought to uncover the real mystery and motive behind the murder, identify the main scene of the crime, recover the victim's motorcycle and other evidence, and identify and arrest other unknown accused persons involved, the application said.
After Tahsif went missing and his body was recovered, his father K M Enayetul Karim filed a case at Uttarkhan police station against unidentified persons. Police arrested Dip as a suspect on the basis of that case.
The case was initially investigated by the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI); Dip was later handed over from the PBI to the naval police following legal process. Earlier, on Thursday night, the PBI had taken Dip into custody for preliminary questioning from a house in B Block of Babar Road in the capital's Mohammadpur area. He is the son of Selim Reza, a resident of that area.
