E-Rickshaw Registration Begins in Dhaka South, Forms Available from Tuesday for Tk 100

Registration of battery-run three-wheeled low-speed rickshaws (e-rickshaws) has formally begun in the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) area, with the aim of establishing discipline in their movement, reducing traffic congestion and building a safe urban transport system.
As part of the programme, application forms will be distributed from Tuesday (3 November) at Tk 100 each. The forms can be collected from Nagar Bhaban and all DSCC zonal offices.
Dhaka South City Corporation administrator Bir Muktijoddha Md Abdus Salam gave the information at a press conference at Nagar Bhaban on Monday (2 November).
He said: 'We have taken up this programme under the new rules to establish discipline in e-rickshaw movement and ensure safe travel for city residents. But registration will not be obtained merely by collecting a form. Only eligible vehicles will be given certificates after fulfilling the prescribed conditions, following BUET's technical standards and completing the necessary verification. Our main goal is to gradually bring all e-rickshaws under the rules and reduce the number of unauthorised and unfit vehicles on the roads.'
The registration is being conducted in accordance with the recently issued 'Rules for the Movement of Three-Wheeled Low-Speed Battery-Run Rickshaws (E-Rickshaws) in City Corporation Areas, 2026' by the Local Government Division.
An applicant for registration must be a Bangladeshi citizen. Subject to payment of the prescribed fee, the documents to be submitted with the application are an attested copy of the national identity card, two recent passport-size photographs, the original fee deposit receipt and a fitness certificate in the prescribed form.
Alongside verification of the application and documents, testing the suitability of the e-rickshaw according to the technical standards and safety features set by the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) and obtaining technical clearance have been made mandatory.
One person can collect a maximum of five application forms and obtain registration for five e-rickshaws against a single national identity card. Collecting or submitting a form will not guarantee registration; certificates will be given only to vehicles that pass all the standards.
There is a plan to divide the DSCC area into a total of four zones to determine routes and control the number of e-rickshaws. The zone-based management will be implemented in consultation with stakeholders including the traffic police.
It is hoped that through proper implementation of the new rules it will be possible to build a clean, orderly and people-friendly transport system in the Dhaka South City area. The city corporation authorities have called on all concerned, including city residents, to extend full cooperation to the programme.
