Democrat Annie Andrews is on course to win a US Senate election in South Carolina for the first time in almost three decades. She was projected to pull off a stunning upset over Republican Darline Graham in Tuesday's midterm elections, according to CBS, the BBC's US partner.

The victory of former paediatrician Annie Andrews gives Democrats a Senate seat in South Carolina for the first time in 28 years.

Darline Graham was appointed to the Senate in July to fill the seat left vacant by the sudden death of her brother, Senator Lindsey Graham. President Donald Trump supported her, and she was handpicked by Trump to take her brother's seat.

Lindsey Graham was elected to the Senate in 2002 and was one of Washington's most influential voices on foreign policy. He often pushed strongly for US military intervention overseas.

Darline Graham is a political newcomer. During her primary campaign she conceded that she was not that informed on national security.

Asked in a recent debate about the US stance towards Taiwan, she said: 'National security is not my thing, not my area of expertise, but I do support the military.'

In this midterm election, all 435 House seats were up for election. In the Senate, 35 of the 100 seats were contested, because senators serve six-year terms.
