29 public holidays in 2027: five days for Eid-ul-Fitr, six for Eid-ul-Azha

Staff Reporter

Following policy approval by the cabinet, the government is set to formally publish the full list of public holidays for 2027. The Ministry of Public Administration may issue the final gazette notification on Wednesday itself.

According to Ministry of Public Administration sources, keeping continuity with the current year, five days of holiday have been set for the holy Eid-ul-Fitr next year, six days for Eid-ul-Azha, and two days for Sharodiya Durga Puja, the main religious festival of the Hindu community.

A responsible official of the ministry, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed to the media that the general holiday on the main day of both Eids will remain in place as usual. However, for Eid-ul-Fitr, a total of four days — two days before and two days after the Eid day — will be holidays by executive order.

Similarly, for Eid-ul-Azha, a total of five days — two days before and three days after the Eid day — have been brought under executive-order holidays. In addition, a general holiday has been set for Bijoya Dashami of Durga Puja and an executive-order holiday for Mahanabami.

Altogether, government employees will enjoy a total of 29 days of public holiday next year, combining general and executive-order holidays. However, seven of those days fall on the weekly holidays of Friday and Saturday.

An analysis shows that general holidays next year total 15 days, of which four fall on weekly holidays. On the other hand, of the 14 executive-order holidays, three fall on weekly holidays.

Earlier, the draft proposal for the 2027 holidays received final approval at the regular cabinet meeting held on November 2.
