Staff Reporter

Six people have been killed in a fire at a two-storey home in Brooklyn, New York, in the United States. Seven others were injured, the city's fire department said.

Heavy fire was reported at 1:40 a.m. early on Thursday in the row-frame building in Brooklyn's Sunset Park neighbourhood. More than 200 firefighters and first responders went to the scene.

The fire was brought under control in about three hours, the fire department said.

In a statement, the department said four people died at the scene. Two people with critical injuries were taken to hospital, where they were later pronounced dead.

Four of the injured suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Three firefighters also suffered minor injuries, the department said.

The names and ages of those killed have not yet been released.

Fire marshals are investigating the cause. A lithium-ion battery was found at the scene, but it was not known whether it was related to the cause of the fire, the department said.
