Voters in three US states — Arizona, Nebraska and Washington — have approved bans on transgender athletes taking part in female sports teams. The bans were approved directly by voters through ballot measures.

Under the approved measures, trans athletes in those three states will not be able to play on female teams. The decisions came through direct votes by the public, meaning the question was put to ordinary voters rather than decided only in a legislature.

Organizers of the bans said the results in the three states were likely to lead to similar ballot efforts elsewhere.

According to that reaction from the organizers, the outcomes in Arizona, Nebraska and Washington could now be followed by similar proposals being put before voters in other parts of the United States.
