120.96 kW Solar Power to Be Installed on PSC Building Roof under MoU with DESCO
A solar power system with a capacity of 120.96 kilowatt-peak (kWp) is being installed on the roof of the Bangladesh Public Service Commission (PSC) building. A memorandum of understanding has been signed between the Dhaka Electric Supply Company (DESCO) and the PSC Secretariat for this purpose. Through this system, part of the commission building's electricity demand will be met from solar power.
The memorandum of understanding was signed on Thursday (5 November). It was signed by Deputy Secretary (Administration) Md Washimul Bari on behalf of the PSC Secretariat and Company Secretary Engineer SM Shahsultan on behalf of DESCO.
DESCO Managing Director Brigadier General Shamim Ahmed said solar panels will be installed on 9,242 square feet of space on the commission building's roof. He said it will be possible to generate 13,400 units of electricity from these panels. However, the notice did not mention the period over which this electricity would be generated.
PSC Chairman Professor Dr Mohammad Nazmuzzaman Bhuiyan said that once the solar power system is operational, part of the commission building's electricity demand can be met from renewable energy. This will reduce dependence on conventional electricity and save electricity costs; at the same time, the use of renewable energy will increase in order to protect the environmental balance.
PSC Secretary Md Fazlur Rahman said the initiative has been taken with the aim of saving energy and achieving sustainable development by increasing the use of solar power in government institutions.
PSC members, the joint secretary, the deputy secretary and other relevant officials, along with DESCO's executive director and other officials, were present at the ceremony.
